Oriental
medicine describes a variety of health practices originating in
China, India and Southeast Asia. Ayurvedic
medicine
emphasizes the use of herbs to improve health and increase resistance
to disease. It is a useful alternative treatment for chronic
conditions like arthritis, asthma, diabetes and heart disease. Hatha
yoga
is the Yogi philosophy of physical well being, that emphasizes
physical training, nourishment and development of the body. Hatha
yoga practices include breathing, exercise, nutrition and healthy
sleep to promote health. Traditional
Chinese medicine
describes a range of traditional Oriental medical practices used in
China for thousands of years. These include acupuncture, cupping,
skin scraping (Gua
Sha),
herbal medicine, joint manipulation (Tuina)
and moxabustion.
Aspen doctors utilize a variety of oriental medicine practices in treatment plans. Patients may receive a prescription for Ayurvedic herbs, medicinal foods, stretching using selected yoga poses, and Gua Sha or cupping treatment, or a referral for acupuncture and moxabustion.
